There are lots of scams circulating at the moment such as the Phishing Scam, however some can be more damaging than others and the deposit scam would be one of them.

This scam works by using your disappointment when losing a bid on an item to get you to part with a large deposit when you receive an email, from what appears to be eBay, offering a second chance to secure the item.

Almost always the person who offers the second chance offer is not the person who listed the item. After being outbid on an item, sometimes by the scammer themselves, the scammer will keep a record of all bidders on the item and will then contact you and other bidders by personal email offering a second chance. You will then be asked by the scammer to pay a deposit to secure the item, you go to collect the item and pay the balance and nobody knows what you are talking about, you never hear from them again.

What to look for

• The scammer will normally try to contact you personally rather than through eBay to avoid the actual seller finding out about a second chance that hasn’t been issued. Avoid this and always use eBay as communication.
• The scammer will normally ask you to pay instantly, claiming that Paypal charges are too expensive or another excuse to keep the transaction away from eBay.
• Check the original listing and search the seller’s details, check that the seller’s email has come through to your eBay messages and  has not just appeared in your inbox. Contact the seller via their feedback page and ask them to confirm the offer.
• Read the seller’s feedback including items sold and bought recently and check it is justified.
• Always try to use Paypal even for deposits as this can be traced.

In a survey of 7,000 people, 15 percent across the UK, US, Ireland and Canada reported receiving a call from scammers. Of these, 22 percent had been deceived by the phishers and so lost money (source: Microsoft).

Long said, “The scammers tell their victims they are providing free security checks and add authenticity by claiming to represent legitimate companies and using telephone directories to refer to their victims by name.”

Victims of the scam are told that, to fix things, all they have to do is give the caller remote access to their computer.

Once trust has been established, the scammers attempt to make the victim think there’s something wrong with their computer. They then trick them into downloading software that gives hackers remote access to their computer.

In the Llandovery area alone this month, seven people have contacted Mr Long after being told they had a virus.  Two of these entered their credit card details on line after giving the scammers access to their computer, thereby allowing them to capture their card details.  As a result their accounts were raided and they only became aware of the theft when they were contacted by their banks.

Mr Long said, “The best way for people to protect themselves is to keep their computer’s security software up to date and to be suspicious of unsolicited calls.  If somebody telephones you out of the blue, never give them remote access to your computer and certainly don’t give them your credit card details.  If you are concerned that you have a virus, then contact a reputable company.”

Having been provided with a new website from their sister organisation in England, Prime Cymru were finding it difficult to edit and update the website, especially as they had to make it bilingual. Pach were able to help by training Prime Cymru on how to use their website effectively and to explain how the technology was working.  Pach was also able to advise on the best use of social media. Pach are able to talk through the website and explain how it works in clear and understandable language for non technical people.

Formed in 1982 LATCH supports children diagnosed with cancer or leukemia and their families not only with medical support, but also social and welfare support to ease the huge financial and emotional burden placed on families with a child on treatment.

Around 70 new cases are diagnosed every year and with treatment lasting from 6 months to three years, along with follow-up treatments and check-ups, children can be under medical supervision for over 5 years.

Myddfai Community Hall & Visitor Centre approached Pach for a new website to showcase what the Hall and Myddfai area has to offer to the local community. The Hall was opened in 2008 after funding from the Big Lottery Campaign. The Bi-lingual website shows flexibility and includes Photography, Videography, Availability Calendars and local information.

The new website provides all information you need to find out about the Hall, Shop, Cafe and surrounding area. After a push on Marketing the website, there has been a noticeable increase of interest in the area.
