With the price of a first class stamp soaring to 60p and second class stamps to 50p at the end of April, no wonder more companies are looking at alternative methods of communicating with their customers.

With the price of a first class stamp soaring to 60p and second class stamps to 50p at the end of April, no wonder more companies are looking at alternative methods of communicating with their customers.

“Over the last 12 months, many of our clients have moved to emailing their customers, but in the last week following the announcement of postage stamp increases, we have had several new enquiries about email distribution” Said Paul Long of Pach Web Solutions.

Long explains “huge savings can be made and there are some very low cost, and in many cases free, bulk-mailing solutions if you have mailing lists of fewer than 2,000”.

“Emailing can be used for so many things, you can email news and offers to your customers, but if you offer them a regular service, such as an annual boiler service, or car MOT for example, you can easily automate reminder emails using these systems.”

Pach Web Solutions are pointing out to their customers that, not only are they saving money on postage stamps, envelopes and paper, they are also going green and reducing their carbon foot print.

Times are tight and its important that every penny you spend on advertising works hard. Recently we've been helping several companies design ads that get their message across. It doesn't matter if your ad is appearing in printed form in a local town magazine, or a country wide magazine, or online via social media, its important that your message is clear and your ad stands out from the crowd.

New Road Garage had a full page ad, but the message was lost. Photographs did not reproduce well, there was an overuse of bold text and white text on black, so there were too many headlines shouting for attention and finally, it did not match the look and feel of other marketing material such as the website.

We went through an exercise of prioritising the messages, and then incorporating these into a design that was aesthetically pleasing and used simple graphics that matched those of the website, as can be seen in the before and after image below.

Roman Solutions had a half page ad, but because they stocked so many products, the ad became overcrowded and confused, also because it was a horizontal half page, items were listed over 2 columns. We analysed the ad and realised they were listing all products all year irrespective of season. We produced 4 ads, one for each season, which emphasised only the seasonal products. We also made the ad a half page vertical, giving a much cleaner, single column list. Items were clearly grouped and a header provided for each group to catch the readers eye. Finally, the new logo was incorporated giving it a consistent look with their website.

‘Phishers’ posing as computer security experts are targeting individuals and businesses in the Llandovery area to steal money and install malicious software on their computers.

Paul Long of Llandovery based Pach Web Solutions said, “The scam works by criminals posing as computer security engineers and calling people at home to tell them they are at risk of a computer security threat,”

In a survey of 7,000 people, 15 percent across the UK, US, Ireland and Canada reported receiving a call from scammers. Of these, 22 percent had been deceived by the phishers and so lost money (source: Microsoft).

Long said, “The scammers tell their victims they are providing free security checks and add authenticity by claiming to represent legitimate companies and using telephone directories to refer to their victims by name.”

Victims of the scam are told that, to fix things, all they have to do is give the caller remote access to their computer.

Once trust has been established, the scammers attempt to make the victim think there’s something wrong with their computer. They then trick them into downloading software that gives hackers remote access to their computer.

In the Llandovery area alone this month, seven people have contacted Mr Long after being told they had a virus. Two of these entered their credit card details on line after giving the scammers access to their computer, thereby allowing them to capture their card details. As a result their accounts were raided and they only became aware of the theft when they were contacted by their banks.

Mr Long said, “The best way for people to protect themselves is to keep their computer’s security software up to date and to be suspicious of unsolicited calls. If somebody telephones you out of the blue, never give them remote access to your computer and certainly don’t give them your credit card details. If you are concerned that you have a virus, then contact a reputable company.”

Dear Mr Andrews

As the owner of a small, independent web design company based in west Wales, I am delighted to hear that the UK Government are proposing to revamp the teaching of ICT in schools in England. My plea is that the Welsh Government follows suit and tackles the problem in Wales.

I have worked in IT for almost 30 years, having studied “Computer Studies” and “Control Technology” at school during the 1980’s where we were actively encouraged to explore how technology worked, how you programmed it, and how you could design and improve it.

I was shocked at the beginning of 2011 when I took on a Work Experience person for a week from the local high school. He was a very able person, and quickly picked up everything I showed him, but even though he was studying ICT at school, this amounted to teaching him basic office skills such as Microsoft Word & Excel, which I would have thought was a pre requisite for all students preparing for the world of work.

Until recently I have brought in expertise to help on specific projects I am working on, but I have always been unable to find these skills locally, and have had to go further afield. At the end of last year I decided to grow my business. I needed a young person to join my team as a full time employee. Again I was unable to find anybody with basic web design skills. In the end I have employed a young, enthusiastic person, who I can train, but this will obviously take time, and cost me.

As a parent with 2 children, one of whom starts high school this autumn, I now worry what level of ICT education they will receive in relation to English students, and those from other countries. We are living in an increasingly competitive and global market, and my fear is that Welsh school children will be unable to compete with their peers elsewhere.

Yours Sincerely

Paul Long
